There was rain on our last day in Taipei. It also turned out that we had already visited all the museums in the city and that can be an option for a rainy day. However, we had to find something to do. Despite the drizzling rain, we decided to take the Maokong Gondola up to the mountain.
The Maokong Mountain is an obvious choice for anyone who likes hiking. You can see a stunning view with tea plantations, enjoy traditional Taiwanese tea in hot pots, try local unusual ice cream and even meet cute cats along the way! Does it sound like a fun day for you? How to take Maokong Gondola up to the mountain
First, you would need to take MRT Wenshan-Neihu Line and get off at Taipei Zoo MRT Station (brown line). From the MRT station, follow the signs and walk about 5 minutes to Taipei Zoo Station. Usually, many people walk there, so you don’t need much help with the direction. Just follow the crowds but make sure its the right crowd.
Payment options: you can buy tickets with cash or use your Easy Card. Make sure you have a full-fare price amount topped up before you line up for a gondola. The tickets to the peak cost NT$120 and partial fares NT$70 for 1 station.
If you travel on a budget, you can take a bus which costs only NT$15. You can check in Google Maps which bus to take.
The Maokong Gondola is 4.3 km long with four stations. Most of the people go directly to the last station – the Maokong Station.

- Taipei Zoo Station (starting point)
- Taipei Zoo South Station
- Zhinan Temple Station
- Maokong Station (final station)
There are two types of gondolas available: the glass floor (Crystal) gondola and the cabins with a regular floor. We came on a weekend day and the Crystal cabin line was extremely long, so we decided to take a regular one. No regrets, the view from the windows was incredible! One-way travel will approximately take between 20 and 30 minutes. We made a time-lapse video from our ride, have a look!
A fun tea experience in Yao Yue Tea Restaurant
As we mentioned earlier, street vendors, teahouses and small restaurants are available up on the mountain. So when the rain began to drizzle harder at some point, we took shelter from the rain in a tea shop.
It turned out we chose some historical famous tea shop called Yao Yue Tea Restaurant. We sat on the open veranda, brewed Taiwanese tea using the traditional method with a beautiful view of the mountains and fog.
It was a great tea experience! We ordered local dumplings, deep-fried tofu and some other food from the menu, too. All the food was yummy but we didn’t have a chance to take any photos because we were way too hungry and finished everything up! So you need to trust us 😆
Yao Yue Tea Restaurant wasn’t cheap but reasonably priced for the quality of food and drinks. You need to pay a compulsory per person water fee. Staff will provide you all the necessary pots and accessories, with the tea pack of your choice (or budget, haha!) After, you need to bring hot water to brew tea by yourself. It is available in one of the many hot water stations you can find around the restaurant.
To be honest, we don’t know much about the traditional tea ceremony and tried it for the first time. The teahouse has an instructional pictorial guide, so don’t be scared, it is all about fun!
By the way, Yao Yue Tea Restaurant is only one of many available options. You can enjoy a pot of local hot tea from many other cliff-side tea houses around. Some of them are a bit pricey but most of the teahouses have a menu in front, so it may be a good idea to check prices first before going inside.
Hiking The Tea Plantations
When we had done with our food and tea, we went to explore other places around. We went back to the Maokong Station to walked up to see the tea plantation view and visit the temple. We saw some cats along the way and stopped by to play with them. After, we bought an ice-cream with two types of tea flavor: the left side was matcha green tea and the right side was Taiwanese oolong tea. The oolong tea ice cream had a very unusual taste for an ice-cream but we loved it a lot!
There were several short hiking trails with waterfalls and brooks available. However, we decided to go with the flow and didn’t plan much. Overall we had an amazing trip even on a rainy day. It was hard for us to find the motivation to get out this day but in the end, we were happy we went all the way up to the Maokong mountain!

2. พื้นปกติ รอคิวไม่เกิน 30 นาที (ถ้าคนเยอะ!)

เมื่อเราเดินเล่นไปเรื่อยๆ คุณฝนดันตก ทำให้ต้องรีบหาร้านชากัน ด้วยขณะนั้นเดินมาไกลมากกกก มาเจอกับร้าน Yao Yue Restaurant (ร้านยอดฮิตของคนไทย) โดยบังเอิญ ดีใจมาก เพราะเดินมาไกลมากกก ฮ่าๆๆ
เราเลือกที่นั่งที่ใกล้เคาเตอร์ที่สุด! มีวิวภูเขาและหมอกให้ชม พร้อมดื่มชาที่คุณชงเอง! มีขั้นตอนให้เสร็จสรรพว่าต้องทำยังไง นั่งไปจนเริ่มหิวก็สั่งของมากินรองท้อง จนลืมถ่ายรูป!
ราคา: ไม่ถูกแต่ก็ไม่แพง สมราคา มีชาให้เลือกมากมาย
นอกจากนั้นระหว่างทางเดินยังมีร้านชามากมายให้เลือก ลองเปิดประสบการณ์ใหม่ แล้วอาจจะเจอร้านที่ดีกว่าก็ได้นะ!
เดินเล่น…ในไร่ชา
เมื่อฟินกันแล้ว….เดินกลับมาที่ Maokong Station แวะซื้อไอศกรีมชาเขียวและชาอู่หลง และเดินต่อไปทางขวาที่เป็นทางแยก จะพบกับทุ่งชาขนาดใหญ่….วัด…และวิว ของเมืองไทเปทั้งเมือง ถ่ายรูปกันจนเพลิน ไร่ชาส่วนใหญ่สามารถลงไปถ่ายได้ ชาวบ้านน่ารักใจดี แค่ห้ามเด็ด ห้ามแตะ และห้ามย่ำ เท่านั้นพอ!
