Have you ever seen any things that were titled ‘the biggest __ in the world’?
We have seen a few here in Thailand. Last year we went to the temple with the largest stupa in the country. We decided to continue our tradition and this time we came to see the largest Buddha statue in Thailand!
We felt so lucky to finally have a chance to visit the famous temple Wat Muang. Many people come to this temple to see and touch the Great Buddha of Thailand. This statue of Buddha is currently the tallest statue in Thailand, the second-tallest statue in Southeast Asia, and the seventh-tallest in the world. The monument is 92m (300ft) high, and 63m (210ft) wide. It’s huge! We couldn’t find much information about this temple in English and decide to blog about it.
Wat Muang is an extremely popular temple among Thai people. Most of the visitors come here to touch the right hand of the Buddha statue. There is a tiny stand made to make it easier for people to pray. We haven’t seen any foreign tourists around the temple for the whole time we were there. We assumed it is because the main crowd prefers to go to Ayutthaya, which located next Ang Thong Province. But if you have a chance, you should come to see the Great Buddha of Thailand by yourself. It is worth it!
You can pray and take a photo with the giant hands of Buddha. After, we would recommend you to walk around the temple area. You can discover a bit random “hell garden” with many scary statues as well as enjoy the architecture of the beautiful buildings. Another great bonus is that there are many restaurants around. We had fried rice with chicken (Khao Pad), spicy papaya salad (Som Tam) and an omelet (Kai Jio) in a simple local shop near the parking area. Our lunch was VERY delicious and extremely affordable. You can also buy some local snacks from the shops in the same area.
Most foreign tourists won’t travel to visit Wat Muang or explore other places in Ang Thong Province. However, if you want to see Thailand a bit further, you should consider this province as an option. Only in small towns you can feel the real Thai spirit and see a lot of local smiles.
